A multimodal cargo transshipment terminal has officially opened in Georgian Batumi, Trend reports citing the press service of the Georgian Ministry of Economy.
The terminal specializes in handling mineral fertilizers. Its capacity is up to 1.5 million tons of cargo per year. At the first stage, 100 people were employed here.
The project's initial cost was $25 million. The project was implemented thanks to US, Uzbek and Georgian investments.
Georgian officials believe that opening of the terminal is another confirmation that Georgia is a strong regional logistics center, which plays an important role in connecting the markets of Europe and Asia.
According to Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Natia Turnava, cargo from Central Asia through Azerbaijan will be distributed around the world through the port of Batumi to the US, Europe, Africa, Australia.
At the same time, Turnava stressed that the demand for mineral fertilizers all over the world is growing in parallel with the increase in the production of agricultural products and food products.
"Based on this, it will be a growing, interesting, profitable and promising business," the minister said.
