Kazakhstan sees increase of plastic cards in circulation

The number of plastic cards in circulation amounted to 50.2 million cards as of Mar. 1, 2021 in Kazakhstan, which is 43.5 percent more than as of Mar. 1, 2020 (35.03 million cards), Trend reports with reference to Kazakhstan’s National Bank.

Of the total number of cards in circulation, 37.1 million cards were debit cards, 11.7 million cards were credit cards, and 1.47 million were other types of cards.

Furthermore, of the total number of cards in circulation, 27.3 million were used over as of Mar. 1, 2021, compared to 19.9 million cards last year, which indicates a 36.8 percent increase year-on-year.

The largest number of debit cards in circulation was registered in Almaty city (10.8 million cards). Almaty city is followed by Nur-Sultan city (3.3 million cards) and Shymkent city (2.2 million cards).

In turn, the greatest number of credit cards also was registered in Almaty city (3.07 million cards), which also is followed by Shymkent (1.1 million cards) and Nur-Sultan city (1.08 million cards).

Some 40.2 million cardholders were registered in Kazakhstan as of Mar. 1, 2021, which indicates an increase of 28.5 percent year-on-year compared to 31.3 million on Mar. 1, 2020.

The total number of payment systems operating in Kazakhstan is 17, including those of the National Bank, systems of money transfers, and systems of plastic cards.
