Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. S.Babayeva / The Azerbaijani specialist will take part at the international workshop, organized through financial assistance of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations FAO, and Agriculture Ministry of Czechia.

The scientific-agrarian centre of the Agriculture Ministry of Azerbaijan has reported that Elkhan Aliyev, the head of the genetic group at the Research Institute, will take part at the workshop.

The workshop will be held in Prague from 23 to 27 September. The topic of the discussion is 'Assessment and management of risks of transgenic plants. The specialists of East Europe and CIS countries have been invited to participate at the workshop.

Aliyev will read report on work made in this direction in Azerbaijan. Transgenic plant possesses a gene or genes that have been transferred from a different species. Although DNA of another species can be integrated in a plant genome by natural processes, the term "transgenic plants" refers to plants created in a laboratory using recombinant DNA technology. The aim is to design plants with specific characteristics by artificial insertion of genes from other species or sometimes entirely different kingdoms. Varieties containing genes of two distinct plant species are frequently created by classical breeders who deliberately force hybridization between distinct plant species when carrying out inter-specific or inter-generic wide crosses with the intention of developing disease resistant crop varieties.
