According to the preliminary estimates, along with direct gas supplies to Afghanistan, Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline will provide the country with an annual income of about $1 billion as transit payments, Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov said.

Meredov made the remarks at the 7th Regional Economic Cooperation Conference on Afghanistan (RECCA VII) in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan’s Oil and gas Complex said in a message.

Moreover, 12,000 jobs are expected to be created in Afghanistan as a result of the operation of TAPI gas pipeline.

Meredov stressed that currently, Turkmenistan is intensively building the Turkmen section of TAPI and is working closely with the Afghan side to complete all technical issues relating to the gas pipeline stretching through Afghanistan.

"The TAPI project implementation will allow Turkmenistan to diversify gas export, stabilize the situation in Afghanistan and meet the growing need for gas in Pakistan and India," the message said.

The construction of the Turkmen section of TAPI pipeline began in December 2015.

The total length of the TAPI pipeline will be 1,814 kilometers. A 214-kilometer section of the pipeline will run through Turkmenistan, a 774-kilometer section will run through Afghanistan and an 826-kilometer section will run through Pakistan to Fazilka settlement on the border with India. The pipeline’s annual capacity will be 33 billion cubic meters of gas.
