Kazakh government dismisses proposal to ban export of sheep

Interdepartmental Commission of Kazakhstan said it is premature to completely ban the export of sheep, Trend reports citing the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The government, together with interested state bodies and organizations, considered the proposal of chairman of the National Association of Sheep Breeders of Kazakhstan Almasbek Sadyrbaev to completely ban the export of small cattle.

"Within the consideration, it was taken into account that other public organizations in the sheep breeding industry expressed their position not to ban the export of sheep as this may negatively affect the financial condition of farmers," the ministry said.

"For some time now the export of breeding stock of small cattle has been banned in Kazakhstan in accordance with a joint order of the ministry of agriculture and the ministry of finance," the ministry added.

Earlier, the Ministry of Agriculture said that special state assistance is being rendered for the development of sheep breeding.

"Breeding work, the acquisition of breeding stock, the cost of sheep sold to feedlots and / or meat processing enterprises are subsidized," the ministry said. "The services for artificial insemination of broodstock in farms and agricultural cooperatives are also subsidized."

"Taking into account the views of the sides, the Interdepartmental Commission considers it premature to completely ban the export of sheep," the ministry said.

Following the discussions, the Ministry of Agriculture was instructed to work out the introduction of a quota mechanism in autumn 2021 for the export of cattle to ensure a balance in the production and sale of mutton.
