The Turkish consulate in Benghazi and the ship carrying humanitarian aid owned by Turkey were attacked on Wednesday morning, the Turkish media reported.
Apparently the attackers are Libyan opposition supporters. They have expressed protest against Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who stated Turkey's opposition to the armed revolutionaries in Libya.
A mass gathered outside the consulate and began breaking the consulate doors and windows. Protestors voiced their dissent against aid from Turkey, demanding that the Turkish flag be immediately lowered. The protesters also voiced anti-Turkish slogans.
Consul Ali Davutoglu commented that though the number of protestors has decreased, the protestors say they will not budge until the Turkish flag is lowered.
"Protestors say Erdogan disappointed them and they urge him to take his place alongside the Libyan revolutionaries," he added.
The public has been protesting in Libya since mid-February. They demand the resignation of Gaddafi, who has ruled the country for more than 40 years.
The UN Security Council adopted a resolution on March 17 calling for the introduction of a no-fly zone over Libya and approved the possibility of using foreign military operations. The operations were launched on March 19.
