The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that swine flu has so far claimed the lives of 1,154 people around the globe, reported PressTV.

According to WHO, the latest information includes 338 deaths which were reported in the week ending last Friday, July 31.

The agency further added that more than 300 of the new deaths were in the Americas, bringing the death toll of that region to 1,008.

There is no evidence that the H1N1 virus is mutating into a more dangerous form, WHO clarified.

It also said that to date, at least 168 countries and territories have reported confirmed swine flu cases.

Swine flu was first detected in Mexico in April 2009 and declared to be a pandemic by WHO in June.

According to WHO flu chief, Keiji Fukuda, the global H1N1 pandemic is still in its early stages; two billion infections over the course of the pandemic would be a reasonable figure to project.
