Baku (ICRC) вЂ" A five-day seminar on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and International Human Rights Law (IHRL) started today in Baku for officers of the Police of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Training is organized by the Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Azerbaijan in cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Azerbaijan.

ICRC experts on police and armed forces train 15 police officers from education, training and operational departments of the Ministry of Interior. Participants will develop their knowledge of IHL and IHRL as well as their understanding of ICRC activities.

They will also familiarize themselves with such topics as conduct of hostilities, commander's responsibility, law enforcement, maintaining public order, and vulnerable groups in society (particularly women and juveniles).

This is the fifth such seminar carried out by the ICRC since June 2003, when the programme was launched in Azerbaijan. Already 60 police officers have attended these trainings.

In accordance with its mandate, the ICRC works worldwide to ensure that armed and security forces receive systematic training in IHL and IHRL.
