A plan of activities for the period till June 26, 2013 dedicated to the International Day against drug use and illicit trafficking was submitted to the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov, Turkmen TV reported on Wednesday.
Approving the plan for upcoming events, Berdymuhamedov instructed they hold them up to standard, noting that "Turkmenistan has always been in solidarity with the global community in waging an uncompromising struggle against illegal drug trafficking and use."
The report also notes that the president emphasised the need for joint efforts to combat this scourge and the active engagement of the honorary elders and social organizations in the country.
Turkmenistan is actively cooperating with the UN in this area as a participant of three international conventions on combating illicit trafficking of narcotic and psychotropic substances, adopted by the UN in 1961, 1971 and 1988.
Turkmenistan joined the Commission on Narcotic Drugs for 2012-2015. The country implements a number of regional and national projects and programmes for the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and the European Union, as well as projects involving the governments of Great Britain and the United States.
Turkmenistan has a long border with Afghanistan, whose territory according to the UN, is widely used for the cultivation of narcotic plants.
