The U.S. George Washington University hosted an event dedicated to the anniversary of the Khojali tragedy, the Azerbaijani-American Council reported.

The event  was organized by the Azerbaijani-American Council (AAC), the Azerbaijan Society of America (ASA), the George Washington University-Turkish Student Association (GWU-TSA) and the Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA).

Azerbaijani Ambassador to the United States Yashar Aliyev, embassy staff, students, media representatives CEO of AAC Javid Huseynov, ASA President Tomris Azeri and the author of a short video prepared by the International Campaign for "Justice to Khojaly," and other guests attended the event.

Speaking at the event, Aliyev provided participants with extensive information on the tragedy and said that the Khojali genocide is imprinted in the hearts of Azerbaijanis as a bloody tragedy. Participants observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims.

"Armenians are trying to communicate the Khojali tragedy as a response to the Sumgait events. But unlike the Khojali tragedy, the Sumgait pogroms were committed during the Soviet regime. Those responsible for these events should be punished, but no one has been brought to justice for the Khojali tragedy," Huseynov said.

A short video and a film about the Khojali tragedy, prepared by Heydar Aliyev Foundation, were shown at the event.
