The governing New Azerbaijan Party's (NAP) deputy executive secretary considers illegal to install traffic lights new foreign embassy buildings in Baku.

"Number of foreign embassies gradually increases in Azerbaijan. Use of traffic lights near foreign embassies causes citizens' anxiety. It is illegal. The law should be amended to regulate this matter," the NAP Deputy Executive Secretary Siyavush Novruzov said at the parliament during discussing changes and amendments to the Law on Traffic on Feb. 24.

Although motorways are much wider in Azerbaijan than some European countries, there is a traffic jam problem, Novruzov said. "Drivers park vehicles at both sides of a road which causes traffic jam in Baku," he said.

The member of the parliament said that not only drivers, but also pedestrians should be responsible for traffic accidents in streets of Baku.

"Residents do not use underground pedestrian crossing at an airport road. Fines should be imposed on citizens due to not using them. Law enforcement agencies should prepare telecasts and explanations in this direction," Novruzov said.

The Azerbaijani parliament adopted changes and amendments to the Law on Traffic.

On the backdrop of quickly increasing car parks in the country, number of traffic accidents decreased by 4.4 percent, death people - 5.5 percent and injured - 5.8 percent in 2008 compared to 2007.
