President of Turkmenistan Gurbangulu Berdymuhamedov approved a national commission for UNESCO in order to further expansion and development of Turkmenistan's cooperation with UNESCO - UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
According to official Turkmen sources, the Turkmen delegation will participate in a high-level conference on education to be held in Paris in July 2009. Recently, UNESCO General Director Koichiro Matsuura who visited Ashgabat handed the Avicenna gold medal to Berdymuhamedov for his contribution to the development of national culture, preservation of historical monuments and the strengthening of cooperation with UNESCO.
The UNESCO World Heritage List included the ancient settlement Kunya-Urgench (Khorezm), Merv (Seljuk empire) and the Old Nisu (Parthia) in the Turkmen territory. At present Turkmenistan's some other proposals are being examined, particularly, including one of the world's largest sand desert - Karakum in the UNESCO list.
