Uzbek President appoints Senate members

Uzbek President Islam Karimov issued a decree to appoint 16 members of Senate (Upper House of the national parliament) of Uzbekistan. The decree on appointment of the Senate members of Oliy Majlis of the Uzbek Republic has been issued in Uzbek official media outlets today.

Uzbek President Islam Karimov issued a decree to appoint 16 members of Senate (Upper House of the national parliament) of Uzbekistan. The decree on appointment of the Senate members of Oliy Majlis of the Uzbek Republic has been issued in Uzbek official media outlets today.

Members of the Senate appointed by the president include the Board Chairman and Director General of Almalyk Mining and Smelting Plant OJSC Alexander Farmanov, Director General of State Enterprise Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Plant Kuvandik Sanakulov, Director General of the National Airline Uzbekistan Airways Valery Tyan, judge of the Constitutional Court of Uzbekistan Yulchibay Tursunbayev, Rector of National University of Uzbekistan Gafurjan Muhammedov, Department Head of the Institute of Art of Uzbek Academy of Sciences Edward Rtveladze, Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, chairperson of the Women's Committee Farida Akbarova, chairman of fund Mahalla Anvar Ahmedov, President of the Academy of Sciences Shavkat Salikhov, member of the Senate of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan, operating on permanent basis Mirabror Usmanov, chairman of the central council of the Fund on support of veterans 'Nuroniy' Erkin Bakibayev, chairman of committee on foreign affairs of the Senate Sadik Safayev, First Deputy Secretary of the National Security Council under the Uzbek President Mir-Akbar Rahmonkulov, spokeswoman of Uzbekistan's Prosecutor General's Office Svetlana Artykova, deputy chairman of the Union of Writers of Uzbekistan for work with Youth Ikboljon Mirzaaliyev and the Advisor to the President Ikhtiyer Abdullayev.

According to the Uzbek Electoral Law, members of the Senate are elected equally - six people from the Republic of Karakalpakstan, regions and Tashkent.

The elections are held by secret vote at joint sessions of MPs of representative agencies of state authority of regions and towns among these members.

Moreover, sixteen members of the Senate are appointed by the Uzbek President among the most authoritative citizens with much practical experience and special merits in the field of science, art, literature, industry and other spheres of public activity.

Last week, the relevant meetings were held. About 84 members were elected to the Senate in January 18-23.

The bicameral parliament in Uzbekistan was formed in 2005. Over 100 MPs work in the upper house - the Senate but 120 MPs work in the Legislative Chamber.

MPs are elected for five years.
