U.S. President Barack Obama's appointing me to this post independently tells about how much importance the U.S. attaches to cooperation with Azerbaijan, the new US ambassador to Azerbaijan, Matthew Bryza, said in Baku at a briefing on Thursday.
"According to the instructions of President, I will do my best for the development and deepening of bilateral relations", - the diplomat said.

According to the U.S. Constitution, the candidates nominated by the President must be approved by the Senate of the U.S. Congress. However, at a time when Congress is in recess between sessions, the President may make appointments independently.
The diplomat said the bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and U.S. contain broad strtategic issues, including the issue of security, energy and internal reforms.
"Official Washington thanks Azerbaijan for its support in combating terrorism and in cooperation on these issues in Afghanistan," Bryza said, describing this support as a contribution to the fight against terrorism.
