US President Barack Obama on election day Tuesday congratulated his Republican challenger Mitt Romney for a "spirited campaign", reported dpa.
Visiting a Democratic Party campaign office in Chicago, Obama thanked volunteers and supporters and voiced confidence he would win but also gave a nod to the team of his opponent.
"I also want to say to Governor Romney, congratulations on a spirited campaign," Obama said.
"I know that his supporters are just as engaged and just as enthusiastic and working just as hard today."
"I'm looking forward to the results. And I expect that we'll have a good night," the president.
"And again, I want to congratulate Governor Romney and his team for a hard-fought race as well."
