Azerbaijan, Baku, 30 May / Trend, R. Hafizoglu /

Militants of the Lebanese group Hezbollah are not involved in hostilities in Syria, Lebanese President Michel Suleiman said, Al Jazeera reported on Thursday.

The president said that Hezbollah is a Lebanese resistance group and has nothing to do with the fighting in Syria.

He added that Syria and Lebanon have a close relationship, but Lebanon wants Syria, which is headed by Bashar al-Assad, to be more democratic.

Earlier, the leader of Hezbollah Hasan Nasrallah declared his intentions to continue supporting Syrian authorities in the fight against the rebels. Immediately after that, Syrian opposition members fired at Shiite neighborhoods of Beirut and promised to strike at other targets in Lebanon.

According to the report, the Syrian rebels demanded that the Government of Lebanon put an end to the involvement of Hezbollah in the battle against government forces in Syria.

Clashes between the government forces and the armed opposition have been ongoing in Syria for over two years. According to UN statistics, the death toll in Syria has reached 70,000 and nearly three million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. Syrian authorities say they oppose the well-armed militants.
