USA, Russia and Azerbaijan to Hold Negotiations on Gabala Radar Station

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. E.Huseynli / Experts from the US, Russia and Azerbaijan will discuss the issue on joint use of the Gabala Radar Station in Baku. The meeting will be held on 15 September.

Russia is renting the Gabala Radar Station in Azerbaijan. The Gabala RS was constructed in the Soviet period. After gaining the independence the station became the Azerbaijani ownership..

The President of Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, offered the joint use of Gabala Radar Station of Azerbaijan during the meeting with the US President George W.Bush within the framework of G8 summit on 7 July.

Baku took into account the statement of, Vladimr Popovkin, the colonel- general and commander of the Space Troops of the Russian Federation. Popovkin stated that the commanding was planning to leave Radar Station, located out of the Russia Federation not to make defensive capacity depend on politicians of other countries. In its turn, Khazar Ibrahim, the head of the Azerbaijani press-service of the Foreign Ministry, said that no appeal regarding refusal of Russia from Gabala Radar Station has been submitted to Baku and separate statements are not an official position of the Russian Federation.

Azerbaijan will lose nothing if Russia refuses use of the Gabala Radar Station, Novruz Mammadov, and the head of the Department on Foreign Relations at the Azerbaijani Executive Administration, said.
