Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend S.Agayeva / The Azerbaijani Education Minister is against the ban for women teachers to wear trousers at Baku-based schools.

"The recommendations by the Baku Education Department to ban women teachers from wearing trousers during classes is a hasty decision," Misir Mardanov, the Azerbaijani Education Minister said in talks with journalists on 24 August.

Earlier, the Baku Education Department stated its intention to ban women teachers from wearing trousers at work. Zamina Aligizi, the head of the Baku City Education Department, stated that there are woman teachers who turn up at the school wearing tight jeans and transparent blouses.

The Minister considers incorrect the limitation of teachers' freedom of selection. "To us teachers are revered and we should not interfere into their affairs," Mardanov said.

The initiative by the Baku Education Department also caused a protest from the teachers, who explained their choice to wear trousers was for comfort reasons as well as to provide warmth at school during the winter period. Various teachers regarded this as a violation of democracy.
