RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, April 29. Several new initiatives will be put forward by COP29 Presidency at COP29 in Azerbaijan, Huseyn Huseynov, Head of Sustainable Development and Social Policy Department at the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Azerbaijan said during a presentation titled “On the Road to COP29 - Priorities and Agenda” held as part of the Islamic Development Bank Group (IsDB) annual meetings in Riyadh, Trend reports.

“A number of new initiatives are expected to be put forward by COP29 Presidency at COP29. Preparation and agreement of those initiatives are discussed within the Negotiators' group headed by the Lead Negotiator at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” he said.

Huseynov noted that at COP29 talks will center on climate finance, transparency and NDCs.

“COP29 will be about bringing all these elements together to drive the process forward. The organizing committee consists of a total of 57 members from government and NGO representatives. In order to move quickly from negotiated text to real world implementation and enhance collaboration between COP Presidencies COP Presidencies Troika mechanism was established,” he said.

Huseynov pointed out that the UNFCCC and COP29 Presidency has an important job to support parties to deliver their first Biennial Transparency Reports by the end of this year.

“These reports are essential for tracking progress and building trust and confidence, and COP29 will organize a series of workshops, starting in Azerbaijan in May, to support the parties,” he said.

Azerbaijan will host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in November this year. The decision was made at the plenary meeting of COP28 held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Within two weeks, Baku, having become the center of the world, will host about 70,000–80,000 foreign guests.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for Conference of Parties, which is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The parties to the convention are 198 countries. Unless the parties have decided otherwise, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Germany's Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
