Kazakhstan sees increase in number of plastic cards in circulation

The number of plastic cards in circulation amounted to 52.5 million cards as of May 1, 2021, in Kazakhstan, which is 39.05 percent more than as of May 1, 2020 (37.7 million cards), Trend reports with reference to Kazakhstan’s National Bank.

Of the total number of cards in circulation, 38.5 million cards were debit cards, 12.5 million cards were credit cards, and 1.4 million were other types of cards.

Furthermore, of the total number of cards in circulation, 26.07 million were used over as of May 1, 2021, compared to 20.4 million cards last year, which indicates a 27.4 percent increase year-on-year.

The largest number of debit cards in circulation was registered in Almaty city (11.4 million cards). Almaty city is followed by Nur-Sultan city (3.3 million cards) and Shymkent city (2.3 million cards).

In turn, the greatest number of credit cards also was registered in Almaty city (3.5 million cards), which also is followed by Shymkent (1.1 million cards) and Nur-Sultan city (1.2 million cards).

Some 40.9 million cardholders were registered in Kazakhstan as of May 1, 2021, which indicates an increase of 26.7 percent year-on-year compared to 32.3 million on May 1, 2020.

The total number of payment systems operating in Kazakhstan is 17, including those of the National Bank, systems of money transfers, and systems of plastic cards.
