WB, Azeri gov't to launch in mid-May official talks over project on reforming health

The World Bank mission headed by a specialist on public health and head the project director Enis Barish has completed estimation of a project on reformation of the health system in Azerbaijan, the Baku office of the WB told Trend. In this respect official talks on credit agreement under the project will be held in mid-May 2006. Approval of the project at the WBs Board of Directors will be held in 2006 Fiscal Year and last till 30 June 2006.

As a result of estimation, the project with the budget of $86m, will be patricianly financed by the International Association for Development ($50m) on privileged terms. The US Agency for international development (USAID) is expected to allot a $8m grant.

The rest funds will be covered by the Azerbaijani government ($20m) and different sources.

The project envisages financing the work ranging from the construction of new hospitals and medical centers to the improvement of services. Certification of all medical services throughout the country will enable the Health Ministry to create database, which would assist in defining every villages need medical institution. In this respect it is planned to create a special computerization program. The reforms will be carried out both the central level and in the level district centers of medical services. Shaki, Gakh. Ismayilli, Agdash and Absheron districts were selected as pilot regions for reorganization of medical services.

The project, developed at the expense of WB grant of $450,000, will take 4 years to complete.
