The Caspian Sea countries (excluding Russia) exported 39.507 billion cubic meters of gas to different places in 2009, the U.S. State Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported.
The export volume of Azerbaijan amounted to 5.92 billion cubic meters, while Kazakhstan showed 9.91 billion, Turkmenistan 18.017 billion, and Iran 5.66 billion cubic meters.
The total gas production in these countries amounted to 226.6 billion cubic meters in 2009, the report reads.
According to the EIA, in 2009 gas production in Azerbaijan amounted to 16.51 billion cubic meters, while Kazakhstan showed 40.96 billion, Turkmenistan 38.13 billion, and Iran 131 billion cubic meters.
Based on the data of the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), in 2009, the total gas production in Azerbaijan was 23.7 billion cubic meters, with 16.78 billion cubic meters falling to PSA contracts with foreign companies. The rest went to SOCAR, which produces gas independently inside the country. The country's gas exports hit 5.35 billion cubic meters in 2009.
Gas consumption in the Caspian countries in 2009 amounted to 171.27 billion cubic meters, of which 10.59 billion cubic meters accounted for Azerbaijan, 8.58 billion for Kazakhstan, 20.1 billion for Turkmenistan, and 132 billion cubic meters for Iran.
The EIA also noted that natural gas imports for 2009 in Kazakhstan amounted to 6.09 billion cubic meters, and Iran received 6.17 billion cubic meters. Other Caspian countries did not import gas.
According to BP, as of early 2010, the known gas reserves in Azerbaijan amounted to 1.31 trillion cubic meters. The corresponding total for Kazakhstan is 1.82 trillion, for Turkmenistan 8.1 trillion and for Iran 29.61 trillion cubic meters.
