Kazakhstan's renewable energy capacities to increase following the end of 2020

The total capacity of Kazakhstan’s renewable energy sources (RES) will be increased from 1,507 MW to 1,769 MW following the end of 2020, Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy told Trend.

"Fifteen RES facilities with the total capacity 457.05 MW were launched in 1H2020, the overall of investments on theses projects was 165 billion tenges ($364.6 million), as a result, 147 new jobs were created," the ministry official said.

Currently, the country has 105 renewable energy facilities operating with a total capacity of 1507 MW. These include wind power plants with a capacity of 390.9 MW; solar power plants with a capacity of 883.6 MW; hydroelectric power plants with a capacity of 224.69 MW, as well as bioelectric power plants with a capacity of 7.82 MW.

The ministry official said that 13 more facilities with a total capacity of 262.53 MW will be commissioned before the end of 2020 (eight wind power plants - 183 MW; two solar power plants - 14.95 MW; three hydroelectric power plants - 64.58 MW).

"By the end of the year, the overall capacity of the country’s renewable energy sources is expected to increase to 1,769 MW. The number of RES facilities will increase to 118," the ministry official said.

The generation of electricity from renewable energy sources in 2020 is projected to reach 3.15 billion kWh or 3 percent of the total electricity production.
