By Jeila Aliyeva - Trend:
Iran has started importing electricity from Turkmenistan, Trend reports, citing the Business Turkmenistan information portal.
Turkmenistan will supply 140 megawatts hours of electricity to the north-eastern province of Iran's Khorasan through the Sarakhs border.
The supply may increase in the future, as currently Iran and Turkmenistan implement the first stage of their agreement on the transfer of electricity.
Turkmenistan's electricity exports increased 2.1 times in 1Q2021, compared to 1Q2020.
During the reporting period, the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan increased the production of electricity for domestic consumption by 6 percent, and for the external market - by 12.9 percent.
One of the reasons for the increase in electricity exports was the launch of the Turkmen-Afghan power transmission line in the direction of Kerki-Shibergan with a voltage of 500 kW in January this year.
Turkmenistan is expected to grow electricity exports by 8.7 percent by 2025. The construction of new power plants, power transmission lines, modern transformer substations, and switchgear will contribute to the growth of exports.
Earlier, the Turkmen Ministry of Energy said that there are opportunities to transit Turkmen electricity through Afghanistan to Tajikistan, Pakistan, and India.
Turkmenistan plans to generate up to 35.5 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity by 2030.
