Azerbaijan to partake in meeting on application of ICT to eliminate natural disaster aftermath

A delegation of the Azerbaijani Communications and Information Technology Ministry and the Emergency Situations Ministry will take part in a meeting on application of information and communication technology (ICT) to eliminate natural disaster aftermath, the Communications Ministry said. The meeting will take place in Bishkek on Feb. 25-27.

"The event is part of the UN Special Program for Economies of Central Asia (SPECA) for 2009. The decision to hold the meeting was taken at the first meeting of a project working group on development based on knowledge that was held in Baku on Nov. 12, 2008," said the office.

The parties will discuss ways to apply ICT and regional cooperation mechanisms for disaster management. The will exchange views on further development and cooperation between the countries of Central Asia and the Caucasus for joint use of existing natural disaster preventing systems and services.

A number of initiatives, including the project Wideband InterNetworking Engineering Test and Demonstration Satellite, which was launched in 2007, will be presented to representatives of the countries participating in the event.

The organizers of the meeting are the Kyrgyzstan Emergency Situations Ministry and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).
