BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 12. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has several projects under preparation in Kyrgyzstan, a source at JICA told Trend.

According to the information, there are projects in the fields of air traffic control, energy grid system operation, vegetable value chain development, medical equipment, and Human Resource Management (HRM) in civil service.

"The special focus in the past years has been on bridge reconstruction and maintenance. JICA supported the technical cooperation project under which the condition of more than 850 bridges on public roads was inspected and prioritized for further repair. Several bridges on international trunk roads have been reconstructed, including the bridge named "Sakura" on the Talas-Taraz road connecting Kyrgyzstan to Kazakhstan," the source said.

The use of pre-stressed concrete technology in the construction of the bridge, as noted, is considered novel for Kyrgyzstan. The inauguration occurred in June 2024, featuring the involvement of the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan.

"Japanese expertise and technologies have been utilized and transmitted to develop engineering structures aimed at mitigating natural disasters on public highways. The country's roadways traverse mountainous terrain and are susceptible to natural hazards like avalanches, landslides, mudflows, and rockfalls. The building of the avalanche protection snowshed on the important Bishkek-Osh road was finished and became operational last autumn," the source said.

Furthermore, in line with the Kyrgyz Republic Cabinet of Ministers' policy to boost the country's air connectivity, JICA stepped up by providing airport safety and ground support equipment, as well as radio navigation systems.

JICA is an independent agency founded in 1974 that supports the economic and social development of developing countries on behalf of the Japanese government. In Kyrgyzstan, it focuses on supporting continuous, balanced economic growth to drive the institutionalization of democracy.
