BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 25. Turkmenistan has discovered 149 gas and gas condensate fields with reserves of more than 4.97 trillion cubic meters, Trend reports with reference to Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper.
Of the total volume of open gas fields, 139 are located on land, 10 - on the Caspian shelf.
At the moment, 54 fields with reserves of more than 2.6 billion cubic meters are under development, 11 fields are ready for development, 73 fields are in the process of exploration, and 11 are in conservation.
Gas production in the country is carried out by Turkmengas and Turkmennebit state concerns, as well as Turkmengeology State Corporation. At the same time, over 80 percent of the total gas production is accounted for by Turkmengas State Concern.
Turkmenistan ranks among the top four countries in terms of natural gas reserves, along with Russia, Iran and Qatar. The largest buyer of Turkmen gas is China.
