Iran Materials 13 December 2010 11:01 (UTC +04:00)

Senior Navy officers and crew of Iran's Alvand destroyer docked in Sri Lanka to join ceremonies marking the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Lankan Navy, IRAN DAILY reported.

The ceremony was attended by commanders and military delegations from more than 26 countries, during which a number of foreign warships, including Alvand, participated.

Iran's delegation held meetings with Lankan officers and discussed ways to improve security in the Indian Ocean, Fars News Agency reported on Sunday.

They also exchanged views on other issues of mutual interest and concern, namely challenges to maritime security, maritime rules, new threats, shifting of economic powerhouses from North America and Europe to Asia, collective response to maritime problems and cooperation between the two navies.

Iran's Navy in recent years has boosted its missions in the high seas and dispatched 10 naval groups to the Gulf of Aden to help protect Iranian and international merchant shipping from Somali pirates.

Commander of the Army's naval forces Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari in September said presence in international waters is part of Tehran's strategy for defending its overseas interests.
