Air pollution in Tehran is approaching emergency levels according to Tehran province's environmental protection director, Mehr news agency reports.
The index for smaller than two micron particulates, fine particulates, stands at 192 today, just eight units short of emergency conditions, said Rasoul Ali Ashrafipour.
Fine particulates are formed through fuel combustion. They are very harmful to human health and are quite serious for people with respiratory problems, children and the elderly.
The index for smaller than 10 micron particulates jumped 60 units from yesterday to today and is at 179.
The weather service is predicting particulate levels will start dropping this evening.
