"I consider that the construction of the Darial hydroelectric station in Kazbegi will cause problems for the environment. After parliament commences, I will definitely demand clarification of the facts on the negative effect of the hydroelectric station to the environment," the winning majority candidate of Georgian Dream in Kazbegi Marian Tsiklauri reported to journalists.
"Construction of the hydroelectric station was launched very quickly with no preliminary research.
The meeting with the local population and nature rangers was only a formality as the decision on construction was already made. This is why the issue has to be on the agenda. I'm not completely sure, but I believe that construction of the station is a real threat to the environment," Tsiklauri told the Mtskheta Mtianeti Information Centre.
Construction of the hydroelectric station on the Terek River was launched on September 2011. Its installation capacity will amount to 110 megawatts. A derivation tunnel will also be constructed, where the river will flow to a length of eight kilometres.
Georgian ecologists state that there is an extinction threat for a number of fish from Georgia's Red Book.
