Georgia to adopt amendments to Forest Code

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Oct. 12

By Maryana Akhmedova – Trend:

The amendments to the Georgian “Forest Code” related to the adjustment of forest boundaries and the land exclusion from the forest fund will be discussed at the sitting of the Finance and Budget Committee, Trend reports via Georgian media.

Maia Bitadze, Chairperson of the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, introduced the legislative initiative of the MPs to her colleagues.

The "Forest Code" came into force on January 1, 2021, but from its adoption to its enactment, a number of issues have been identified that need to be clarified and legitimized.

"This is the first "Forest Code", which complies with the Association Agreement, as well as the principles of sustainable forest management, established by both the EU and international law," said Maia Bitadze.

According to the project, the National Forest Agency is given the right to initiate the issue of adjusting forest boundaries legally.

The changes relate to the general concept of excluding forest fund boundaries and also define in detail the criteria for adjusting the forest boundary. The change also envisages the strengthening of the forest resource management function.

According to Maia Bitadze, the developed changes are unified with the legislation of the protected areas.

The Finance and Budget Committee supported the discussion of the bill at the plenary session.
