Lebanon agrees to pay outstanding funds for Hariri tribunal

Lebanon has agreed to pay the funds it owes for the United Nations tribunal into the 2005 assassination of the country's former premier Rafik Hariri,DPA reported.

An arrangement to pay 32 million dollars is expected to be finalized before President Michel Suleiman travels to New York for the UN General Assembly on September 18, the daily al Liwaa said.

Lebanon is obligated to pay a 49 per cent of the funding for the tribunal.

But the issue of the UN Special Tribunal for Lebanon has been the subject of bitter internal division in Lebanon, with the opposition Hezbollah movement repeatedly asserting that it will not cooperate.

Four Hezbollah members have been indicted in the murder.

Hariri was killed in a car bombing in Beirut on February 14, 2005. Syria and its allies in Lebanon have been widely blamed for the murder which has caused international outcry and led Damascus to pull out of Lebanon after 30-years of military presence in 2005.

According to the report in al Liwaa, the funds for the tribunal could be drawn from the budget surplus or treasury advance.

A treasury advance only needs the approval of the president, the premier, and finance minister's and it does not require a cabinet decision.
