A Palestinian militant was killed on Monday in Israeli artillery shelling on the northern Gaza Strip, Palestinian fighters said, dpa reported.

The armed wing of the pro-Hamas popular resistance committees (PRC) said in a statement that one of its members was killed by an Israeli army tank shell near the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Lahia.

The statement said that Mohamed Ghaben, 20, resident of Beit Lahia was killed as he was carrying out a military intelligence mission near the border of the Gaza Strip and Israel.

Medics at Kamal Odwan Hospital in northern Gaza Strip had earlier said that one Palestinian, who was critically wounded earlier on Monday, had been admitted to the hospital.

Witnesses living in the area said that the Israeli army fired four artillery shells at the area, where one Palestinian was critically wounded and was taken to the hospital. No other injuries were reported.
