Nearly 1,000 evacuated from Polish salt mine after storm, blackout

Nearly 1,000 people were evacuated from the Wieliczka salt mine after lightning struck a nearby transformer station, dpa reported according to Polish Radio Monday.

Local officials said some 960 sightseers were inside the mine, a popular tourist destination in southern Poland, when the electricity went out.

Some 50,000 residents in the area were left without power after the storm hit Monday night.
