It is a mistake to politicize sports, because it unites people and is beyond any politics, French Ambassador to Azerbaijan Pascal Meunier told Trend June 15.

He said that the opening ceremony of the first European Games in Baku was on a high level.

He went on to add that it was a very beautiful event, the information about culture was well organized, red balls evoking pomegranates, as well as the interesting effect of Gobustan rocks appearing as if from under the earth on the stage of the Baku Crystal Hall were beautiful, elegant and very tasteful.

He said that the president of the National Olympic Committee of France visited the Athletes' Village and was impressed by the quality of facilities for the athletes, as well as the restaurant, both of very high standard.

The diplomat also said France has already won seven medals at the European Games.

He expressed hope for further success of the French team and wished good luck to all the athletes.

The European Games kicked off in Baku June 12 and will last till June 28.

There is a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
