Iran rejected the media statements that Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has discussed ongoing Syria crisis at his meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry.

The sides only discussed the nuclear issue, the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the procedure of lifting international sanctions against Iran during the meeting, the Islamic Republic's foreign ministry spokeswoman, Marzieh Afkham said Oct. 3.

"The media stated that alongside with the nuclear issue, the Syrian crisis was also discussed at a meeting between the two ministers Oct. 2 citing Iranian sources," Afkham said, ISNA news agency reported. "This information is not true."

Kerry and Zarif held an impromptu meeting at a United Nations gathering of the world leaders October 2.

Reportedly the two top diplomats sent their advisers out of the room to meet alone, then left separately without commenting.

US State Department spokesman John Kirby said the two were "taking advantage of their presence in New York" to discuss carrying out the Iran deal. It was the second time they met there this week.

Meanwhile some Western media quoted Iranian sources as saying that Kerry and Zarif also discussed the crisis in Syria and Russian air strikes against rebels fighting the Syrian government.
