Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Alasania emphasized the need for a Membership Action Plan at NATO for Georgia and active U.S. support in this regard, in a meeting with U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden in Washington.
The meeting was held as part of the conference of the Atlantic Council, the Georgian Defense Ministry told Trend.
Alasania expressed gratitude to Biden for active support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and its aspirations to join NATO. Moreover, Alasania stressed the importance of the US-Georgia Strategic Partnership.
In particular, the matter rests in the situation in Ukraine and the Russian policy in the region. Alasania stressed the importance of joint efforts of the U.S. and Europe to stabilize the situation in the region and to overcome the existing challenges.
Great attention has been paid to Georgia's membership in NATO.
The sides also discussed the US-Georgian bilateral cooperation. Biden stressed Georgia's progress on the reform of the defense sector. He also thanked the Georgian side for taking part in the ISAF mission. The democratic processes in Georgia were also discussed during the conversation.
Alasania is on a working visit to the U.S.
