Ruling party: Azerbaijani diplomacy to take immediate actions in resolving Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 6 / Trend M. Aliyev /

Azerbaijani diplomacy, in all cases related to the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, will take immediate steps. It will be able to effectively use all means within the OSCE and the UN, Mubariz Gurbanli, deputy executive secretary of the party, said in an interview with the official website of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party.

It is wrong and unreally to completely abandon the OSCE Minsk Group's mediation in the current situation, deputy executive secretary said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.

He said that the Azerbaijani side has repeatedly stated about the shortcomings of the OSCE Minsk Group.

"We know that the UN Security Council adopted resolutions on resolving the conflict since the beginning of the conflict. But these resolutions have not been fulfilled. But the Azerbaijani side said that it is able to take the necessary steps in the future to discuss the conflict at a higher level from the UN rostrum. This is our country's right, " he added.

He said that Azerbaijani diplomacy is not limited by the OSCE. It has repeatedly raised the issue of resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict on the level of such organizations as the Council of Europe, the Organization of Islamic Conference, the UN General Assembly.
