Increased role of women in the government testifies for development of democracy in the society, said Ramig Hashimov, head of the Presidential Administration sector for regional administration and local government.
During his speech at a conference on the Role of women in local self-government of the Azerbaijan Republic, organized by the State Committee for Family, Women and Children, Hashimov praised the election of 302 women to chairmanship of municipalities through the elections held by late 2009.
The fact, that 26 percent of those who have achieved success in municipal elections are women, testifies for a strong and correct gender policy in the country, said Hijran Huseynova, chairman of SCFWC.
"There is no other country with such number of municipalities as it is in Azerbaijan," Huseynova said.
Huseynova advised municipalities to pay more attention to family, women and children issues and help them in solving problems.
There are no women among 23 chairmen of municipalities, who were prosecuted in 2009, said the head of the Center for work with municipalities of the Justice Ministry, Mehdi Salamzade. "This is connected with a high degree of women responsibility," Salamzade believes.
