Azerbaijan, Baku, June 30 / Trend U.Sadikhova /

Adoption of the law on defamation in Azerbaijan will be a serious advance in the field of freedom of the media, Former OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Miklos Haraszti said at the conference-seminar "Values of the new media era" in Baku today.

Haraszti said the Azerbaijani parliament is ready to accept the bill on defamation.

The conference-seminar organizers are the association of broadcasters in Europe and the Organization of public service broadcasters in Norway, together with the Azerbaijan Media Centre.

Haraszti expressed concern over the fact that a number of journalists are in police custody in Azerbaijan.

He also believes it is necessary to lift the ban on broadcasting of foreign radio stations in Azerbaijan.

Haraszti named the positive the fact that Azerbaijan was one of the first countries in the former Soviet Union, where a public television was created.
