BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 3. The European Union views Azerbaijan as a reliable partner in energy transformation, the Director of the Energy Platform and International Relations Task Force within the Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENERG) of the European Commission, Cristina Lobillo Borrero said at the Baku Energy Forum, Trend reports.
According to her, the European Union continues to make steady
progress towards energy transformation and, for the first time in
its history, has produced more electricity from renewable sources
than from conventional sources.
“This is a significant achievement, and we continue to fulfill our
commitments on sustainable development and climate neutrality,” she
noted.
She also emphasized that the issue of energy security remains a
priority for the EU, especially in the context of geopolitical
instability.
“We need reliable partners, and Azerbaijan is a vivid example of
such a partner. We have strong ties both in the issues of natural
gas supply and renewable energy,” Cristina Lobillo Borrero
said.
The official stated that the European Commission intends to completely stop importing Russian energy resources, reducing the volume of purchases from 155 up to 33 bcm of gas per year with the aim of complete withdrawal in the future. In this regard, partnership with alternative suppliers and the development of “green” energy are becoming key directions of the EU policy.
The representative of the European Commission also noted the importance of international cooperation, transparency in access to resources, and attracting investments in sustainable energy, emphasizing the role of forums such as COP29 and the Baku Energy Forum in building a global energy dialogue.
