Food accounts for roughly 65 percent of the Azerbaijani population's consumer spending, Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee Chairman Arif Valiyev said on Feb. 26.

"Food accounts for 65 percent of the population's consumer spending. Although the figure is still high, it is gradually decreasing," Valiyev said.

The figure was 75 percent 10 years ago and 90 percent even before, he said.

"The decrease comes as the living standard improves and incomes rise," he said.

Food expenditures continue to grow, but their overall percentage in terms of general spending is shrinking, Valiyev said.

In January, goods and services purchases added 84.6 percent, taxes, insurance and mandatory membership fees - 12.4 percent, and accumulation and increasing capital - three percent to the general spending volume.

In January, the population spent 620.9 million manat for food and 318.6 million manat for non-food goods.

On Feb. 26, the official exchange rate is 0.8052 manat to $1.
