Kazakh president: Public opinion to be taken into account when changing alphabet

Baku, Azerbaijan, Apr. 3

By Rashid Shirinov – Trend:

In Kazakhstan, the transition of the Kazakh language to the Latin script will be carried out in stages, and public opinion on the shortcomings in the alphabet will be taken into account, said President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Trend reports via Kazakh media.

"The transition of the Kazakh language to the Latin script will be carried out in stages. There is a clearly defined schedule and we will not deviate from it. Public opinion, advantages and omissions will also be taken into account when applying the alphabet," the head of state said.

It should be noted that in October 2017, the first president of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev signed a decree on the phased transition of the alphabet of the Kazakh language into the Latin script until 2025. The same decree approved the alphabet based on the Latin script of 32 letters.

"Choosing the alphabet is not just about choosing a writing pattern. Today Kazakhstan keeps pace with the dictates of the present time. Neighboring countries also chose the Latin script, 90 percent of the information in the world is published in Latin. The transition of the Kazakh language to the Latin alphabet is one of the key stages of spiritual modernization," Tokayev stressed.
