Iran has reached self-sufficiency in cryogenic pumps for oil industry, according to Iran industrial pumps Group's managing director Faraj Pourvand.

Pourvand said cryogenic pumps are used in gas refineries for pumping liquefied propane and butane at minus 48 Celsius to tankers, Iran's IRNA news agency reported on Jan. 13.

The Iranian-made pumps are equal to European-made products in quality and are higher compared than Asian-made rivals, he noted.

However, price of the domestically-made pumps is two third of European-made products, he said, adding that manufacturing the pump took over three years.

He added that manufacturing pumps for oil and gas, water and power industries domestically will save $400 million annually.

A cryogenic pump is a vacuum pump that traps gases and vapors by condensing them on a cold surface. They are sometimes used to block particular contaminants, for example in front of a diffusion pump to trap backstreaming oil.
