Iran’s unemployment rate hits 12.2%

Iran's unemployment rate during the spring (March 20-June 21) stood at 12.2 percent, according to the latest report from the Iranian Statistical Center.

The unemployment rate among Iranians aged over 10 years in the mentioned three-month period was 1.4 percent more than the same period of 2015.

The figure also indicates a 0.4-percent increase compared to the preceding quarter's unemployment rate (Dec. 22, 2015 – March 20, 2016).

About 22.6 million of Iranians above 10 years old were employed in the mentioned three-month period, which are 742,882 more compared to the spring of 2015.

All Iranians aged over 10 years, who worked at least one hour a week, or temporary left their work during the survey week, were included as employed labor force in the report.

The country's labor force participation rate has increased by 1.5 percent – to 39.5 percent compared to spring 2015.

The figure indicates an increase by 1.8 percent compared to the winter of 2016.

About 19.1 percent of the country's labor force was employed in the agriculture sector, while 31.4 and 49.4 percent were employed in the industry and services sectors, respectively.

Iran’s unemployment rate is estimated to be 11.3 percent in 2016, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The figure is expected to hit 11.2 by 2017, IMF said in its latest World Economic Outlook (WEO) report.
