Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian has expressed interest in synchronizing the country’s power grid with Europe.

“We are currently capable of exchanging energy with those neighbors that have terrestrial border with Iran, including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Iraq. We are now planning to connect to the power grid of Europe through some of our neighbors,” Ardakanian said on Feb. 12 on the sidelines of an administrative meeting in Iran.

According to a report published by Iran's Energy Ministry in January, the nominal electricity generation capacity of the country increased by 1,915 megawatts (MW) to 78,343 MW since the beginning of the current fiscal year (March 20, 2017).

The country’s power plants generated over 266.91 TWh (terawatt hours) of electricity between March 21, 2017 and Jan. 19, according to the report.
