The National Olympic Committee of Georgia has adopted a decision at an extraordinary meeting to participate in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. As reported by the NOC, the decision was taken unanimously.

At least 46 delegates, representatives of various sports federations participated in the voting process, the committee reported.

NOC President Leri Khabelov congratulated everyone with the decision. "We made it based on consideration of sport and I am glad the preparations of our Olympic team have not passed by in vain" he said, wishing the athletes a good performance in Sochi.

Georgia will send a formal request to participate in the Winter Olympics in Sochi to the IOC by May 7.

It should be noted that Georgia and Russia have no diplomatic relations.

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili had previously mentioned the possibility of boycotting the Sochi Olympics.

Large scale military action was launched in South Ossetia in Georgia on August 8 2008. Later Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military. Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow in response and has announced the two unrecognised republics to be occupied territories.
