European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton welcomed Tuesday the end of a nine-month political stalemate in Iraq, urging the new government of Nuri al-Maliki to work for stability, economic development and regional cooperation, dpa reported.

High Representative Ashton said Tuesday's approval in parliament of the government "marks another important chapter in the democratic development of the country."

"I hope and trust that the new government will do everything it can to ensure that Iraq continues on its path to lasting stability, advancing on issues of national reconciliation, proceeding with economic reconstruction and fostering constructive relations with its international partners and countries throughout the region," she added in a statement.
