Hundreds of Jordanians gathered Thursday near the Israeli embassy for protests, calling for the closure of the Israeli embassy in Amman, Xinhua reported.
The demonstrators gathered on a plot of land some two km away from the Israeli embassy in Amman.
Over 1,500 security personnel were seen surrounding the embassy and in the nearby streets as about 400 Jordanians chanted slogans against Israel.
"We want Jordan free from an Israeli embassy. We do not want any ties with Israel," chanted the demonstrators.
The demonstrators called for abolishing the Wadi Araba peace treaty Jordan and Israel signed in 1994.
Some demonstrators tried to approach the streets near the Israeli embassy but were stopped by the police.
Local media reported that the Israeli ambassador and other diplomats were asked by the Israeli authorities to leave Jordan midnight Wednesday.
