Women's rights are coming along, but slowly, in Saudi Arabia, said German Chancellor Angela Merkel Wednesday while on a diplomatic trip to Saudi Arabia, DPA reported.
"It is a slow process, but one that is finding its pace here," she said before a meeting with Saudi female entrepreneurs. "I am especially happy about this meeting."
Women's role in Saudi society is heavily subordinate to that of men, to the point where they may not even drive cars themselves.
Merkel's visit to Saudi Arabia also took her to Saudi Arabia's Kind Abdullah University of Science and Technology, the only institute in the country where men and women may study together.
